Personal Growth & Project Outcome

OUR REFLECTIONS

We realised that there are these underprivileged (intellectually disabled) people living in our society, and they should not be discriminated due to any disabilities they have. Every citizen should do their part to contribute and help out.

We have raised awareness for the intellectually disabled through our door-to-door visits. Moreover, we have helped equip the children with basic arithmetic skills like addition and subtraction of numbers through our weekly lessons. With a better understanding of the needs of these children, we would have a more inclusive society.

Through our interactions with the children at MINDS Fernvale Gardens School, we are able to better relate to the problems they face and can now effectively communicate with them to provide assistance when they are in need of help.

Individual Reflections

Hon Shien

Prior to embarking on this project, I had never had the chance to interact with those that have intellectual disabilities. Our first visit to the school was really an eye-opener for me as I had never expected communicating with the children to be so challenging. It took a while to understand their speech but I think it was much easier to work with them after that. At the end of the day, I have come to understand to not see them as a group of children with intellectual disabilities but to see them as individuals.

This was the first time I had a chance to interact with people with intellectual disabilities,  and it really struck me when I found out about the number of people actually with these disabilities. Through this experience, I learnt to be empathetic towards these people and of course our job is to make more people do the same. Since the children have these disabilities, I am grateful for this opportunity which can equip them with skills to ease their integration into society.

I have learnt that organising service learning activities require a lot of planning and effort as the activities often involve a larger community. I have also learnt the importance of having good foresight as we did not expect Seletar Mall to take such a long period of time to secure us a spot in the mall, resulting in a delayed showcase date.

Through this project, I have understood the importance of planning and organisation, especially for Service Learning Projects. With all the details of our plans and activities well organised and formatted, we are able to work more efficiently as a group. I have also learnt to be patient while doing this project. I have learnt that many Organisations are extremely busy and are short of manpower so they will take a while to respond to our group if we are trying to communicate with them. I was not aware of this at first and am now more understanding with the time taken for them to reply us.

Before I embarked on this project, I had stereotypes against people with intellectual disabilities but now I feel that our cause is really meaningful, and it helps the children to learn some valuable skills in life, such as money counting. I also improved my speaking abilities, as well as learning how to interact with those who require special help, and I realised that they should not treated differently as others in this society.
